Although research and older methods have been done since 1950, Lasik eye surgery has only recently become available in most countries.  It has been developed and refined over the past sixty years to a such a degree that many people believe it to be a miracle.  Patients who have had Lasik eye surgery had their eyes restored to 20/20 vision, but this type of surgery might not be for everyone as there are many factors to consider before surgery.

Movement of the eye

Because of previous ailments and diseases of the eye, not everyone has the ability to move their eyes normally.  Eye mobility is an important factor when Lasik eye surgery is considered.  There is no real relation between eye mobility and 20/20 vision, but the mobility of the eye is imported for Lasik surgery to be successful.  If you do not have 20/20 vision, but your eyes are healthy and moves around in all directions easily, then chances are Lasik surgery could be done successfully.

The procedure

There are many preoperative procedures to apply with before Lasik surgery can be done.  The lenses of your eyes are measured and it is advised to stop wearing contact lenses a couple of days before surgery. During the process, a laser is used to cut and reshape the cornea. Lasik is not recommended for diseases of the eye, but rather for vision problems and a proper eye examination is needed before Lasik can be recommended.

Cost

As research is done and the process of Lasik improves, the cost of the surgery is expected to drop.  Presently, Lasik is a costly operation and could amount to thousands of dollars.  This could depend on where the operation is done, the experience of the surgeon and the extensiveness of your condition and surgery.

The future of Lasik

As with all research, Lasik too will be a continuously growing and developing procedure as more doctors are trained and more research leads to better technology and options.  Speak to your doctor during consultation about the best surgery suited to your specific condition.  Be sure to always make an informed decision.
